Caterpillar CAT S41 review
Ultra tough, underwater photography and Battery Share
Our Caterpillar Cat S41 review takes a look at a smartphone that touts the above, making it the number one phone for builders, mechanics, engineers and extreme sports participants. The phone really is for anyone who knows that their smartphone will get abused, in one way or another.
Super Bright display
The Caterpillar Cat S41 has a Super Bright 5” display with Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels). This ensures that even when the sun is shining strong, the display can still be read with ease.

What’s more, Caterpillar go one step further by incorporating glove and wet finger support. This is ideal for outside use on a typical rainy British day.
Toughness is at the core of the Cat S41 and the phone has been designed to meat MIL SPEC 810G and IP68 standards. This means that the phone is waterproof at up to two metres depth for 60 minutes.
The front glass is scratch and shatter resist Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and the Cat S41 has been drop tested from 1.8m onto a concrete surface. This tough phone can also resist dust, salt mist spray and thermal shock.
Meeting these standards does add a little weight and thickness, but thankfully not too much. The Cat S41 weighs 218g and is 12.85mm thick.
The design itself is quite recognisable. The body is made from hardened rubber and the colour scheme uses Caterpillar’s signature black and yellow.
You might be anticipating a sluggish performance but you would be very wrong indeed. The Cat S41 has a MediaTek 2.3GHz octa-core processor and 3GB RAM, which would give any flagship phone a run for its money. Apps open quickly and gameplay and internet browsing are both fluid.
Phone Set Up
Caterpillar has given the Cat S41 a plentiful 32GB internal memory. There is plenty of room here for moving old phone content over. There is also a microSD card and this accepts cards with any value up to 128GB.
The Caterpillar Cat S41 is powered by Google’s Android Nougat operating system. This makes the phone very desirable with access to the Google Assistant, Maps, Chrome, Search, Gmail, Duo (video calling) and Drive (Cloud online backup).

You can make the most of the Play Music app with a bottom ported speaker that does not get muffled when the phone is put onto a flat surface. You can also download new content and apps from the Play Store.
Caterpillar’s Programmable Key
The Caterpillar programmable key is a nice touch and it is completely customisable. You can assign one function for a short press and another for a long press, which makes it infinitely more useful. Some of the options for this are listed below:
- Short press - Turn on the Flashlight, open a Google search browser or manage incoming calls
- Long press - Wake up the phone, open a Google search browser, turn on the flashlight or manage incoming calls
Camera & Video
A quality camera pairing
The Cat S41 receives a good pairing of cameras. The main camera has a 13MP resolution and fast focusing is achieved with Phase Detect Auto Focus technology. You can use the camera to take photos and videos underwater or shoot wide landscapes in Panoramic Mode.
The selfie camera has a 8MP resolution. You can even use both cameras at the same time, creating a Picture in Picture (PIP) result. Here you capture a landscape scene and a photo of you behind the lens gets added to the result.
The Cat S41 has a battery with a simply huge capacity. The 5,000mAh battery can offer up to 44 days of standby time or up to 38 hours of talk time.
The battery is so big that it can even be used to charge another phone or accessory. The Battery Share cable is included and you can even set a limit so that charging stops once your battery has been depleted to a certain level.
